Pre-K Child Care & Class
Pre-Kindergarten Class 2011-2012

Pre-Kindergarten Class for Ages 4 & 5.
Join us for a movement based class that prepares your child for Kindergarten.

The Pre-Kindergarten program at Dr. John’s Sports Center provides high quality education for children the year before kindergarten to prepare them for school success.  With all our programs at Dr. John’s Sports Center, we place a heavy emphasis on healthy lifestyles and being physically active.  To give parents options in their child’s educational experience, our 4-5 year old program incorporates a classroom setting, emphasis on physical activity as well as extended child care for working parents.

Our class size is limited to 20 students with one licensed teacher and one or more assistants.  Our Pre-K teacher holds a teaching license with experience teaching 4-year-olds.   Within our enrollment, children are divided into smaller groups for activity and instruction.  Having the smaller groups rotate to our instructors within our closed setting allows for children to interact with all our instructors and provides a wider variety of learning opportunities for our children.

The instructional framework used in Dr. John’s Pre-K classroom is called "Big Day for Pre-K" from Scholastic, Inc. (www.scholastic.com).  This curriculum is a comprehensive early childhood education program that builds upon children's curiosity and interest, and encourages them to explore, play and learn about the world around them.   There are 8 themes that are divided through the year.   Early in the year, the themes focus on concepts in children's more immediate world, and they broaden over the course of the year.  This framework integrates learning across content areas:

- Ready for School! - My Family - Our Community - Awesome Animals - Imagine it, Make It - Growing up Healthy - Nature All Around Us - Moving On

We follow the Leander ISD school calendar for 2011-2012 in that our Pre-K class is held 5 days a week for 3 hours each morning on all LISD school days.   Pre-K classes are not held at Dr. John’s during student vacations, but our child care services are available for the working parent.

Start time each day is 8:30 am with classroom and gym instruction lasting until noon.  Children bring a sack lunch and experience the social intereaction of mealtime.  Our half day program ends at 12:30 pm right after the conclusion of lunch.  Sack lunches are required during the published school calendar days; all snacks are provided by Dr. John’s Sports Center.  Half day students receive the same level of instruction as full time students but leave before naptime, afternoon playtime and afternoon snack.  Lunch & afternoon snack is provided on those days where LISD is observing a student holiday and Dr. John’s Sports Center is holding full day camps for school aged children and 4 & 5 year old child care services.

Full Day Child Care

Child Care Services for working parents:

Our child care program works in conjunction with our Pre-K School.  We open up at 7:00 am for working parents and conclude our child care services at 6:00 pm.  Each morning we offer supervised free play to our 4 & 5 year olds in our multipurpose area and/or gym and allows for a transition time for all students to arrive and begin class at 8:30 am. Children enrolled only in our Pre-K program conclude their day after lunch and our child care services begin for full day students.  As our days are full of activity, small children need rest time to rejuvenate for an afternoon of play.  Quite time/nap time is scheduled from 12:45 – 2:00pm.

The 2:00 pm afternoon play starts off with large group games suitable for 4-5 year olds and is held in our gym or outdoor sport fields until our school age children arrive for After School Care at 3:00 pm.  All children receive afternoon snack at 3:00 with our 4 & 5 year old program utilizing their classroom away from the older children.   For those families familiar with our Sports Center, the Dance Studio is turned into a dedicated Pre-K classroom from the first day of school in August until the last day of school in June.  Depending on the developmental level, there may be the addition of “tender” 5 year olds just starting kindergarten that may need to start the new school year in a more enclosed after school care setting.  Snack is followed by a variety of after school activities suitable for 4-5 year olds including arts and crafts, cooking classes, playing games and utilizing traditional play materials located within their classroom as well as a physical activity rotation within their own Pre-K group utilizing the gym or outdoor field areas.

In addition we offer a weekly enrichment program on Thursdays and can include older children within our After School program.  These can be music, gardening, photography, cooking, nature studies - what we refer to as our “Clubs”.  The Clubs rotate on a monthly basis to give kids the opportunity to experience a variety of lifetime pursuit activities.  Where some of our “Clubs” are developmentally too advanced for the 4 & 5 year, there maybe offerings where the 4 & 5 year old can participate in a specifically defined multi-age Club group.  The inclusion of the younger children in our “Club” activities allows for many learning opportunities for sharing, problem solving and group interaction skills similar to what children experience within a large family. This opportunity also allows our sibling groups to work together in activities under supervision of our trained staff.

Full Day Camps are also offered during Leander ISD school holidays, for more information visit our Camps 2011- 2012 page.
